Colon Cleanses

To Cleanse or Not To Cleanse?

Colon cleanses are readily available. However, few have been tested for safety, especially for the elderly or those with kidney dysfunction or heart disease.

“People think that because the colon has bacteria and because feces stinks, it is dangerous, toxic and harmful. Actually, those things nourish colon cells and are designed by nature to be in contact,” said Dr. J. Scott Gibson, internist/gastroenterologist.

Instead of cleansing to maintain colon health, it is safer to eat a balanced diet with vegetables, fruit, and whole grains and exercise regularly.

If you have trouble with digestion or regularity, consult your physician.
