Birthing Center: What to Bring to the Hospital

What to Bring to the Hospital

For the Labor or Birthing Room

  • A watch or clock with a second hand or one with a digital timer that will show the seconds. This is helpful for timing contractions.
  • Your favorite music CDs that can help soothe you
  • A camera, tape recorder and/or video equipment to catch those magic moments
  • Powders, lotions or massaging oils that you like
  • A hairbrush if you like having your hair brushed for comfort
  • A tennis ball or plastic rolling pin for a counter massage should lower backache become a problem
  • Sugarless lollipops to help keep your mouth moist
  • Heavy socks in case your feet become cold
  • A brown bag lunch or snack for dad or the coach
  • A bottle of champagne or sparking cider to toast the newest member of your family (The staff can put it in a refrigerator until you want it.)

For the Hospital Room

  • A robe
  • Perfume, powder or body spray...whatever makes you feel fresh.
  • Toiletries, including shampoo, toothpaste, lotion, makeup, and any other beauty or hygiene products you may want
  • Sanitary pads
  • A going-home outfit for you (remember, you'll still have a sizeable abdomen)
  • A going-home outfit for the baby – a stretch suit, t-shirt, booties, and a blanket if it is cold
