Cancer Center Commended by Commission on Cancer

A recognition achieved by only 25% of cancer centers nationwide.

McMinnville, OR - The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons has awarded The Cancer Center at Willamette Valley Medical Center their highest level of accreditation – Three-Year Approval with Commendation – announced Rosemari Davis, Willamette Valley Medical Center's chief executive officer. This is a recognition achieved by only 25% of cancer centers nationwide. Approval with this designation recognizes that the Center had no deficiencies, met all 36 of the Commission's stringent standards and received a commendation rating for one or more standard.

The Center, which has been accredited since 2005, must undergo a rigorous and comprehensive evaluation every three years. The review includes an on-site survey performed by a physician surveyor who is specially trained to evaluate compliance with the 36 standards that are required for approval.

"We are so grateful to the physicians, staff and nurses who are dedicated to providing the highest quality care at the Center," added Rosemari. "When the Center first opened its doors in 2002, we told the community not to expect a small-town cancer center, but a state-of-the-art cancer center in a small town. It's gratifying to have the Commission recognize our vision and dedication to providing the highest quality of care to those batting cancer."

Kelly McGraw, executive director of the Willamette Valley Cancer Foundation and cancer program coordinator for the Cancer Registry, noted, "With a diagnosis of cancer, you're faced with many decisions. The commendation from the Commission is reassurance for our community that they don't have to travel great distances to get great cancer care. They have access to some of the best cancer care in the nation right here in their own backyard."
